Taiwan Week 59: Lamest Typhoon Ever

Dear family and friends,

Well this week was a weird one. Everyone was preparing for a record size typhoon to hit, so meeting with people was pretty interesting. Tuesday we got hit by heavy rain right before our ZTM. But we had a great meeting. We focused on working with members and getting member referrals. Elder Chang (Chuson) and Elder Cao gave some really good training on asking for member referrals. It was so amazing.    Afterwards, Elder Feigleson's bike had a flat tire and there was nowhere near us to fix it. So we had to walk a long way and put our entire schedule behind. It was rough.

But we had an amazing lesson with a less active that we met with last week. A Patrick. He's the one that was baptized and then went less active shortly after, but found another Christian church later on. I just had this urge to call one random less active in our phone. I came across a Pablo and decided to call him. It was Patrick! He changed his name a few years ago. It was a such a miracle for all of us because he had lost Elder Vandiford's number and needed it again.. As we talked, we got on the subject of the Book of Mormon. He only had the old translation. We brought out a new one for him. He said after all these years, he remembers one picture that our church has that stood out to him so much. It's the one with Christ descending into the Americas with his arms held out to the people. It's in the Book of Mormon! So I turned to it and he just stared. The Spirit was so strong. He said he'd start reading it again!

Wednesday was so crazy. We helped a member move in a new fridge. In the end we had to carry it down a flight of stairs from one house, and then up 4 flights of stairs to his apartment. It was so hard. But he's a really cool member. He loves taking pictures, and I came across one of Chase Gluch with Elder Tate! Later that afternoon I went down to Donggang again with Elder Cao and Elder Chang for english class.

Thursday we had lessons all over the place, so we were just running around so much. But it all came down to a less active dinner. There are a few less actives in our ward that are pretty close friends, thry're super less active, they know they're less active, they know we want to help them come back to church, and love joking about it to us. So they put together a less active dinner at a Thai restaurant. It was pretty interesting. But we built better relationships with them, so hopefully it'll help them a bit too.

Friday we had our interviews. President Blickenstaff and his wife are super cool! And yes, his nephew opened the Blickenstaffs toy store in the Riverwoods. I'm a little jealous of the missionaries in Taizhong. Sister Blickenstaff loves to cook and loves cooking for them. I'm excited to have him as a mission president.  That night we biked out to a far area to visit a recent convert. He's really cool, but has so many problems with his family. It's sad. He's just asking for help and comfort. He's got some epic willpower though.

Saturday was the day of the "Big Typhoon." We went running in the morning with some rain and semi strong winds, and then it got really crazy for about 10 minutes during breakfast. But after that there was nothing. Some typhoon. Everyone was still scared that it was going to come, so no one was out on the street.

Sunday was so amazing! Kang Dx came to church and loved it. After church, we finished up the rest of the lessons and went over the baptismal interview questions! He is so ready! I'm way excited. Then last night we had a deep lesson with a very long term investigator. He was so open with us. I could tell he had a huge trust in us. So I was happy for that.

And that was my week. I really need to catch up in my journal. There are some details in these that are so amazing. It was a great week! I hope you are all doing great. I love you all! I'll keep you in my prayers.

Love, Elder Anthony Kai Buckwalter
